Don Bluth is a legendary American animator and film director who worked at Walt Disney Productions before founding his own studio in 1979. In the early 1980s, Bluth pioneered a new form of interactive entertainment by directing Dragon’s Lair (1983) and Space Ace (1984) — laserdisc arcade games that used full animation to create a cinematic gaming experience unlike anything previously seen. The promotional artwork created for these games, including original paintings and poster art, represents some of the most visually spectacular and historically important pieces in video game art collecting. Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace promotional originals consistently achieve some of the highest prices of any video game art at auction, with the Dragon’s Lair promotional poster selling for $54,000 at Heritage Auctions in 2020.
